Remember This Face? Disaster Girl Is All Grown Up Now!
Before she was “Disaster Girl,” the little girl with the devious face was simply Zoe Roth, a 4-year-old girl out with her dad and brother. One Saturday morning in January 2004 changed all that. Little did she know that her face would soon be all over the internet, adorning hilarious Photoshop battles.
Remember Disaster Girl?
In 2004, Dave Roth took a picture of his daughter in front of a burning house. It later went viral.
In November 2007, he submitted it to the “JPG” magazine “Emotion Capture” photo contest and named it “Firestarter.” The photo won, and Dave received $100 as a reward, but he hadn’t yet told his daughter. Instead, he nonchalantly handed it to her. It was at this point that the image made it’s way online.
The magazine shared the photo on its website and it took off from there. People began photoshopping her onto other disastrous events, like the Hindenburg explosion and the Titanic, among many others. No one could get enough of the adorable young girl’s mischievous look.
Most of the memes referenced the girl’s evil-looking smile.
Many laughs were had.
Well, if you’re keeping score, 2004 was 12 years ago.
Disaster Girl’s been growing up.
Dave Roth has continued to take pictures of his daughter, whose name is Zoe.
In fact, you can watch her grow up on his Flickr account…
…and yeah, we definitely feel old right now.
It’s one thing to see child celebrities age.
It’s quite another to watch a meme grow up before your eyes.
Zoe can drive now, folks.
Yes, Disaster Girl’s behind the wheel.
Zoe Roth Now
Today, Zoe is just an average teen girl. She studies hard in school, takes a few college classes, and is fluent in Chinese. “I’d love for the meme to help me get into or pay for college somehow,” Zoe says. “But I ultimately want people to know me for me.” Like many children that were thrust into fame or celebrity status at such a young age, Zoe is just trying to be as normal as possible these days, and we can’t blame her!
We’ll leave their family alone, but it’s great to get some background on this meme.
