11 Actors Who Underwent Complete Transformations For Specific Roles

In the age of photoshops, Computer generated imagery(CGI) and digitally enhanced movies, it comes as a surprise there are still some actors who give 100% to transform themselves for a specific role in a movie.Although most of the credit can be attributed to their makeup artists, there are still few who physically transform themselves.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer plays a recurring role of a shape-shifter Mystique in the X-Men series. The makeup process to transform into the character takes up to 8 hours and Jennifer either stands or sits on a bicycle while she is painted on.



Ralph Fiennes

Voldemort from Harry Potter was successfully portrayed by Ralph Fiennes. It took Oscar winning makeup artist Mark Coulier two hours to transform Ralph. Mark had the nose digitally manipulated along with printing blue and purple veins as temporary tattoos.


Zoe Saldana

Saldana claims it took four hours in the makeup chair to transform into the green alien Gamora for the movie Guardians of the Galaxy.



Johnny Depp

Playing the role of Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland film had Johnny Depp spend hours in makeup and airbrushing. He also had orange yak hairs glued to his eyebrows.



Ron Perlman 

The movie Hellboy had Perlman undergo four hours of makeup transformation in 2004 and again for its sequel in 2008. Not only that, he reprised the role again for the Make-A-Wish request of a six-year-old boy suffering from leukemia.



John Travolta

John went a step further to transform himself to play the role of the opposite gender, Edna in the musical Hairspray. He needed five hours of prosthetics and makeup application.



Robin Williams

The movie Mrs.Doubtfire had Robin opt for eight separate stages of makeup application to fit into his role.



Charlize Theron 

Charlize underwent an incredible makeup transformation for the movie Monster where she played the role of a real life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. She even won an Academy Award for Best Actress for the role.



Sigourney Weaver

Weaver underwent an unrecognizable transformation for her role in Snow White: A Tale of Terror as Claudia Hoffman. This role bagged her an Emmy award as well.



Chris Hemsworth 

Chris underwent a remarkable transformation where he had to sacrifice his Thor body play a much more frail character in the adventure drama In The Heart of the Sea. Although makeup played a major role, Hemsworth lost most of his weight to fit into the character.

Jeff had to endure seven stages of makeup to play his part in David Cronenberg’s classic body horror The Fly. The many hours spent in the makeup chair earned him much-needed recognition.
